I would like to change the gear ratio on my truck from 3.73 to 4.10. How should I go about doing that? I have a 2005 1500 HD 4x4.

Welcome, Everglades.

A rear gear swap is not for the uninitiated !!!!! It takes a few special tools and knowledge to do correctly.

The dealer would probably do it, but charge an arm and a leg. Shop around some local shops in your area, try to talk to folks that have had their gears changed and find a reputable shop like that.

Gears, done right, you'll never give a thought to.

Gears done wrong will haunt you every time you drive... until they blow up !!!!

You made a lot of good points. I wouldn't dream taking on a task like that myself, as I know a lot more about real estate than ring and pinions. Anyway, I found that the parts alone would be around $1300-1500 but I am more worried about compromising the quadrasteer itself with all that computer crap and all. I just don't know if the local 4x4 shop can handle a task like this or not but I guess I'll start making some phone calls. Thanks for the input and if you or anyone hears of anybody actually doing this please reply.

That part of our rears wouldn't be any different from any other rearend, so any good rearend shop should have no problems.

$13-1500 eek II ???? That's insane. The whole job shouldn't cost that Confused

Definetely call around !!

Hey Everglades,

I'm looking to do the same thing you are. I think your best bet would be to use a ring an pinion istallation shop, like an off road shop that deals with r/p sets, and can warranty the work.
Is your truck still under the mfg. warranty?

When i do change out my r/p, i'll most likely order them myself, versus buying from the dealership. You should be able to find out what company mfg. the ring and pinion for GM, and order your 4.10 from them or a retail outlet that sells their gears. That way, you'll at least be using comparble parts.

Let me know how it goes if you plan on going though with it.

Did either of you go through with the swap- or get a recommendation from a dealer on it? I am considering the same change, see the other thread in the rearend forum...

Thanks

John

Need more burn out

Must have tune, and injecotrs, and CAI.

That with the rear end would be sweeet!

Am I missing anything from my wish list?
