What oil do you guys use in your trucks. I have always used fram oil filters and castrol motor oil but I have been thinking of switching to royal purple or something similiar. what are you guys using synthetics or blends? what are your thoughts is it worth the extra expense?

I use Mobile One...full synthetic. Makes me feel better that I use a full synthetic engine oil when my "change oil" light comes on only every 6-8 months. I am a firm beleive that most people change their oil way to often. 6,000 miles or 6 months is plenty sufficient, unless you drive in extreme conditions. I also use the a Moblie one filter.

I use Mobil 1 too, at every 10,000 km (~6000 miles) or when "change oil" comes on, which ever comes first; and long version AC Delco filter. I couldn’t find long Fram filters.

There was another discussion on this subject, search for "engine oil"; most of us use synthetic like Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc.

the long interval determined by the computer is why I was thinking of going to synthetic. I have never used any synthetics before so I was just curious what the rest of you guys were using. I guess the only thing i was concerned about the extra cost vs any extra benefit.

If you are planning to keep your truck for a long time, I would suggest using synthetic oils, you save in the end. burn out However, if you are planning to replace your truck soon, 3 to 5 years, and you don’t put many miles on it, then use regular. cheers

I recommend against using Fram filters. From what I have read, they make them as cheaply as possible.

I personally use Mobil 1 synthetic oil and an AC Delco PF59 (little more capacity) filter.

I agree that a 3k mile oil change interval is a waste of money; I wait until 7500 miles, which is still probably excessive. I am not sure if synthetics are worth the extra cost for everyone. I spend so much on gasoline, that a little extra on oil is insignificant!

I have found Royal Purple and a WIX filter to be the right setup. I drive about 50 miles a day and get about 4K to 5K miles before I get my oil light. I know NASCAR is high on the filter. I used to use the K&N gold filter, but at $10 a pop, it can get expensive. Here in Oregon, the WIX is around $6 bucks!

Another synthetic oil you might consider is Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30 (Amsoil TSO info). I have used this since the first oil change after new, and like not only the long life (easily twice the miles for the same indicated oil life), but the significantly quieter, easier starts, particularly in cold weather (good synthetics do not leave the bearing surfaces unlubricated while the engine's off, and do not turn to jelly in winter temps) and at least slightly improved fuel economy.
