Hi, I have a 2003 1500 hd qs 4x4. I bought it with 28,000 miles on it, it has 48,000 miles on it now. It's been making a weird rubbing / grinding noise for about the last 2,000 miles when I make turns with or without the QS on. The tires are not rubbing. I changed the synthetic oil in the rear and the noise went away for a day then came back. I took it to the dealer and they said the rear was going bad. $4200 to rebuild, $5100 to replace the rearend. The previouse owner had a 5th wheel in it, but only for 28,000 miles. I don't drag a trailer or haul heavy loads often. Is this common for a rear to go out so young? I,m just glad I opted for the extended warranty.
On some of the other forums I saw people writing in about the steering making noise or sticking. Thats how my truck acted just before I was informed about the bad ring and pinion gears. Any info would be great, thanks.

Heyya, Phil.

Hmm, not good. I think I remember one other unit chewing up a ring and pinion, don't really remember the exact cause tho. I wouldn't say it's common.

And, the cause... man, I just dunno beats me Maybe just a sub-standard assembly off the line ?? Hopefully it was never damaged or wrecked. These are Dana 60s- they're known for their durability. Strange indeed...

Wish I could help more, but at least you're covered !!! Let us know how it goes thumbs up 2

I have been having the same issue lately as well as a couple others here. There was another post about this titled "rearend noise" and the creator got it fixed at the dealer but never told us what the fix was. Don't think he had the rearend replaced though. I am taking mine in on Monday to have it checked out. 2002 Denali

Thanks for the reply. I also wanted to add that when I changed the oil in the rear 2 weeks ago there was a bunch of fine metal shavings on the drain plug magnet. It was full.

Same problem here too. I really hope it's not the ring and pinion. If it is....we're all doomed!

I'll be taking my truck in the first week of Oct. I'll let you know what they find. If it ends up just needing extra additive, I'm gunna smack someone at that dealership.

Well, I took it to the dealer. They got the warranty inspector to do his thing, and they got the go ahead to open her up. Once it's torn apart, the warranty inspector will come back to look at the parts to see what the damage is. They also approved my rental car, so I'll pick that up in the morning. When they let me know what happened and what a possible cause is, I'll let you guys know.

Just took mine in today for the same thing. They said the front diff bearings were the culprit. Apparently they opened it up and had shavings all over the place.

What is the standard drivetrain warranty on these trucks anyhow (I am away from home so I don't have my paperwork here)? My recollection is 36k miles?

while my '03 was up on the rack getting the REVOS yesterday ( that funny) I noticed some leakage around the front bearing, so I will be heading to the dealer soon myself...

I hear ya on the extended part- I have another 6 months to decide if I want it.

Thanks for the info re: the warranty- BTW, not to hijack the thread, but I have only had the REVO's (265/75/16 E-Load's) for a day and I love them! Thanks to everyone here who has been advocating them- now for a Westers.....

Hmmm.... nah, we could probably still work something up, but it would need to happen THIS weekend, at the latest.

Which would mean anyone that wants in would need to contact me, get the forms filled and returned and get their payment info to me by, say, Sunday evening.

Any takers ?? Gimme 4 more and we'll make it 15%, say.... oh.... 6~7 more for 20% drool

You guys thinking about it, I assure you- you won't be dissatisfied Big Grin
