Great news, the dealership calle today to let me know the truck is ready. I've got to pay the $100 deductable, and buy a new battery. Not too bad, considering the bill would have been over $4000 if I had to pay for the repair myself. I'll pick the truck up in the morning.
It's gunna be hard giving up the Malibu, but I think I'll survive.
I'll let you guys know how it drives in a couple of days. I might even post some pictures.

Even greater news. I've put about 500 miles on the truck and it is running perfect. Absolutely no noise when turning. It's like a new truck.

Well, I have over 55,000 miles on the truck and it's still running great.

Awphil03, just out of curiousity, did you admit to the dealer/warranty people that a different lubricant was used in the QS pumpkin than otherwise specified? I know you mentioned earlier that the previous owner hauled heavy loads, which may have contributed more to the breakdown of the gears, just wondered if the warranty people had the knowledge factor of the wrong lubricant being added as part of their decision to replace. I guess it looks like for you, investing in the extended warranty was worth it.

John 1500 HD QS, how did you do at the dealership with your truck?

In my case, I got a new seal on the pinion end of the diff within 200 miles of the warranty expiring.... I had heard the replacement is a better part then the original, we will see. Other than some "moistness" around the pinion, I havent see much other than the occasional clunk off a dead start, nothing like many of you have experienced.

On a related note- I bought the extended warranty the same day ($1100 for another 2 yrs 30k miles) and just this week had the fuel pump replaced, buying back $750 net of the extended warranty- sure it woulda been cheaper someplace else, but it works for me so far....
