I don't know about you, but when I find a cheaper spot to buy gas (or diesel as it may be), I want to top my tank off. The 2500-series SUV has a 37 galon tank as it is but I'm always jealous of those pickup guys who can go to Transfer Flow or Titan Tanks and get a replacement onboard fuel tank up to 100-gallons. Add the in-bed tank and you can haul a lot of fuel.
I've tried , but nobody out there supports the GMT-800 SUVs. So, I've found a company in California who is willing to produce a custom high capacity tank for the Suburban 2500 and Yukon XL 2500. Uses your factory sending unit and pickup hardware. I won't know the exact capacity until they measure the truck, but I'm hoping for 60+ gallons. -P. 2005 GMC Yukon XL 2500 SLT Quadrasteer 4x4, 1SD Package, 3.73s, U59 Silver Birch Metallic 6.6L LBZ Duramax Conversion Allison 1000 6-speed tranny with SunCoast/McRat 1057 Converter and Transgo Jr. upgrade Mike L. HA HA HA HA HA HA!
ROTFLMFAO! A poll? On this forum? And at that, one that is not for owners of the more popular pickup, but of the rare 3/4 ton SUV? Of which there are only a grand total of like THREE of us here? You, me, and the guy with that red one in Florida, forget his name, but it got wrecked soon after he got it, remember? He had it rebuilt, showed us the bodyshop bill? And you are conducting a poll? As absolutely dead as this site is? Did you count all the votes yet? Peter, have you been keeping up on your meds? JUST KIDDING! But that was funny! I've got to clean my screen, I bursted out laughing so hard when I saw the "POLL". Can't blame you for trying though. Is the company called "Transfer Flow" in Chico, California? They might make a tank for YOU, with a diesel, but they won't make a tank for gasoline powered passenger vehicles in California, due to CARB certifications, liability, etc etc. I don't have the stones or the bones to convert to diesel just yet.... but I might in the distant future (like fall 2008 or later, after the warranty expires). You've certainly paved the way for 4WS owners. Our 3/4 tons already have 2 tanks and a transfer pump that equalizes them. Are you willing to sacrifice your spare tire to make the 11 gallon aft tank larger? Still, between the clearance limitaions for the electric motor/pinion rack for the rear axle, and the last frame cross member, that will only get about 9 more gallons before interfering with departure angles. And you'll have to put the spare inside. Ugh. That's one reason why I never like the GMT400 utility vehicles. The larger midship tank is even tighter, as it abuts the mid frame cross member and torsion bar keys in front, and the axle in back. The only direction to go is down, which will interfere with the breakover angle. At most I can see adding 4 gallons capacity here, spread over the entire bottom of the tank, with a little bump out forward above the mid crossmember. And I would have to add the expense of a long sturdy skid/slide plate to protect the deeper tank that is now lower than the already famously low riding GM frame rails. So, I'm having a hard time seeing this work for gassers, due to CARB. And for me, the sheer costs in dollars two all new tanks, as well as the reduction in payload/towing capacity due to a heavier custom tank (welded from metal, I assume, since engineering/prototyping costs for a two molds for plastic tanks would be out of the question)... all for such such a small increase in capacity... with the additional detriments of a spare tire inside, or worse, on the roof (raising center of gravity in an SUV is never a good thing, even as stable as ours are with the wider rear axle track), and the reduced breakover and departure angles... I can't see new tanks being worth it. So that explains my vote. Please feel free to educate me on what I'm not seeing though, because I'm sure you've already consider these points, and may have come up with solutions I hadn't thought of. ___________________ |
