Also there seems to be some play in the rear end or the transmission, it seems to thud when you take off from a complete stop, sometimes when you creep along it'll thud also.

Anyone else have these problems? I hope this isn't a QS thing.

Right now I'm really glad that I got my zero deductable warranty.
I have been having the EXACT same issues on my 66000 mile '03 for the last few thousand miles. Can you let me know if you ever found out what the cause was?

The rear end lube needs to be changed every 30,000 miles and that'll take care of the problem.

Good luck!

A solution for rear end clutch noise. My 2003 Chevy 1500HD 4X4 CrewCab Quadrasteer with 50,000 miles started a few months ago with a slight jerking sensation while stopped at traffic light if the brake was not pressed enough to keep it from slowly creeping. I first suspected transmission or U joint problem. this progressed to a poping sound while backing out of my driveway while turning. It gradually progressed to a loud rumbling simular to the sound a knobby tire would make if rubbing the fender well. This was followed by the same sound while turning sharp in a forward motion as well.
Last Saturday I had a complete 4x4 fluid change done at a local Shell Quick lube. All fluids, transmission, transfer case, differencial, engine oil. They used synthetic gear oil with the and a bottle of additive recommended for the limited slip but the noise did not change at all.
I went to 2 different shops to see what might be causing this problem and with making so many sharp circles duplicating the noise for them it made everything get even worse. Both shops said the it sounded like a clutch problem.
I decided to take it to the dealership where I purchased the truck and after them contacting GM techs it was found out that these rear ends us a Quadrasteer only lubricant.
After removing the cover plate and inspecting to see there was no major problem they flushed the case and installed the correct fluid.
When I picked the truck up the noise was still there as bad as ever and was told I may have to drive it for a few weeks to work the fluid into the clutches. I drove less than 5 miles on the interstate when I heard a loud pop like I had ran over a sealed plastic pop bottle or something. It was loud enought that I looked behind me to see what I had hit but nothing was there.
When I got home I drove in sharp circles and found that all my noise is gone. As for price it cost me $177.00 at he dealership but a lot better than having a rebuild done.

My 2002 Q-steer Denali just went in to the dealer for slow speed noise in the rear. Change the oil after I had changed it.
Now they are changing the Posi unit. Oh only 30 k miles, never off road, never beat on.
Out of warrinty by 5 mo. I am picking up the Labor, Gm the parts. Not a happy camper.

I have had this same problem with my truck. It is a 2003 Silverado 1500HD with 75K miles. The dealer replaced the fluid in the rear end and it made it a little better. The noise and jerking reappeared and the dealer says I need the whole rear end rebuilt. The cost is approx. $1500.00. I asked if GM could pick up the cost of the parts and they said no. I am currently going through the GM 1-800 customer service number. They say they will call me back in a couple of days. I am not a happy camper!!!

Maybe the dealer put in the wrong rear-end fluid, not the Quadrasteer specified rear-end fluid.

If you have the extended warranty GM should pick up the whole cost. Besides a rear-end will not wear out in 75,000 miles. If it did than that part was defective. Talk to the service mangager and tell him to get the Zone Rep out there to get involved. Service managers don't like to get these reps involved, so your problem may resolve itself.

Good Luck

Hopefully you still have a copy of the invoice, with the lubricant that was used by the dealer, in hand when you go back.

Correct lube to be used: P/N 12378557 (Canadian P/N 88901362)

Yes, they used the right stuff. As I said, the change did make it a lot better. But, it did not completely fix it. I'm just not happy having to pay for the fix 100%. I have never had problems with a rear end on any vehicle, and my truck only has 75K miles. GM knows the rear end is the achilles heel of this system and they are acting like they don't. It's a real shame because I absolutely love the thing except for this.

It's about 6 mos. now and no problem with the new Rear. But the new rear is only warranty for 12 mos. or 12,000 miles per GM, realy hope it is not needed to be repair again in 30k.

as the for the symptoms this is exactly how my truck acted and sounded starting around 50k miles. went to the dealership and got 3 qtrs of the qs gear lube for $25 a bottle and changed the oil in the rear end and after about a day and a half (25 - 30 miles) all noise, chatter, everything completely gone. Drives and feels like brand new!!
Thank god too!! When i went to the dealer to pick up the lube there was a qs jacked up with the entire qs system laying in the floor in a million pieces, blown spider gear? $3k, and my heart was in my throat.

GM should bite the bullet and put out a recall on the recommendations in the owners manual for the care of the qs rear ends. If you follow their advice they will no doubt self destruct.

P.S. there was very little shavings on the magnet in the drain plug, more like a thin layer of silver putty.

My '03 1500HD had this problem after the "professionals" at a local quick lube put the wrong fluid in. After talking to a GM tech, he said to have them flush it and put in the QS fluid. I only put about 300 miles on the truck when I noticed the noises. After flushing (with synthetic) and finally replacing with the QS fluid the noise is gone. Just towed my boat 450+ miles and no problems...
