I installed a 180 degree Tstat in a GMC 2005 crew cab 1500HD with the 6.0 gas motor. I do not have the electric fans because it is more like the 3/4 ton. The factory clutch is rated to lockup at 195 degrees. The temp gage and my scanner show 195 all of the time. Is there any way to get the temp down or do these trucks run at 195 no mater what? I checked the Tstat in a pot of water and it opened at about 180 before I installed it. Has anyone found a replacement clutch without going to electric fans that will lockup at 180 degree?

I have a 1993 Chevy with the 5.7. The diesel in 1993 uses a 180 degree clutch. I installed the diesel years ago and this truck never overheats.

Is there any help or information out there?

Why do you want it to run cooler? It will get better fuel economy running warmer.

I have found that here in Southern Ca. it gets around 100 to 120 degrees alot during the summer and pulling a trailer in stop and go traffic will smoke a motor. 195 degrees is way to hot for out here. When I changed my clutch fan on the Chevy, it made no change to the milage. At 9 to 12 mpg it can't be any worse. My computer tuning guy also said that it won't change the MPG.

180 thermostat will open at around 180, but this does not mean that the engine will run at 180. Radiator cooling capacity will set the running temperature after the thermostat opens. In slow traffic, without fans, I don't think you can run any cooler.

I agree with you Ken. If I can change the clutch so that it locks up below the 195 or 200 degree. Then it would cool closer to the 180 degree mark. Pusher fans would not work very well because the trans cooler covers a large part of the AC condenser. They need to be flat on the core. There is a lot of space between the Trans, AC and Radator cores. I am not sure that electric fans could pull the air eather. The factory never used electric on the 1500HD or larger trucks for this reason.

I have 2500 yukon, 6.0 lt and transmission cooling, and have electric fans. I thought 1500HD trucks have the same setup Confused

I have the old style clutch and fan on the water pump. The 1500HD crew cabs are really a 3/4 ton with softer rear springs and tor. bars for the ride. I have also changed the trans cooler to one that is about 15 wide by 13 by 1 1/2 thick. The factory one is way to small for pulling a trailer. That is why there isn't any room for pusher fans. The trans used to run 175 to 200 degrees. Now it runs 125-150 degrees. I don't want to pull the trans cooler.
