Hi All,

I'm thinking about changing to Synthetic motor oil here shortly. I will probably go with Mobil 1.

What do you all think about extended drain intervals with a filter change in the middle of the interval? Say an interval of 10,000 miles with a filter change at 5k.

Or should I go with Amsoil because they tout the Extended drain interval?

I was only thinking about Mobil 1 because I can get it locally and not have to go thru a rep or order it online.

It looks like oil experts are in short supply.

I wish I could help but my knowledge on this subject is lacking. Perhaps you should try it and let the DIC answer the question.

Amsoil

I run Amsoil in my engine and tranny. Works very well, I change mine when it look dirty but not over 3000 miles. For the cost of the fluid it is save insurance. I would rather over change it than not change it enought

Hi Sean;

There are two or three discussions on this topic with lots of good information. Search for oil, you’ll find them.

I use Mobil-1, 5w-30 on my truck and my wife’s car, since after the first oil changes. The truck is now around 25,000 miles, and the car is around 165,000 miles. I change the oil at every 6,000 miles or whenever DIC says so; which ever comes first. I wouldn’t pass the DIC limit, since the new oil monitoring systems take account engine rev and temp when calculating the oil life.

cheers
Ken

Hi Sean,
I run Mobil 1 in my truck and my wife's truck. I change the oil and filter and rotate the tires every 5000 miles. Maybe slight overkill, but it's really not that expensive, and I like the peace of mind. Mobil 1 now has their new oil that states that you can go 15000 miles. (they say) I still stick with regular Mobil 1 and do the 5k thing. As a former Service Manager at a new car dealership, I can tell you that you can't change it too often. I've seen some horror shows, now lemme tell ya. We've had engines apart that were so sludged up, you couldn't even see the timing gears. I can tell you that I don't remember tearing down one single engine that was running sythetic oil. Either it's alot better, which I believe, or the people that use it take better care of their vehicles. (which I also believe)
Another option: Look in your owners manual. See what the maximum oil change interval is using CONVENTIONAL oil. Use that interval, but with sythetic. That's what I did when I ran a deisel pickup. I ran Mobil Delvac-1, and changed oil and filter every 10k. Just some ideas for you.
