This is going to be somewhat lengthy and for that I apologize in advance.

Here is my problem. I purchased a 2003 Chevy 1500HD crewcab 6.0L with quadrasteer in march. I noticed a slight "shudder" sound when I was backing up. This mainly occured when it was cold. When I asked other Chevy owners I was told it was a "typical chevy" rearend. Well the problem persisted and I took it to the stealership I purchased it from. I had to take it there becuase of the "extended warranty" I purchased which turned out to be a "service contract. None the less they had it for one day and told me they couldnt get it to make the noise I was complaining about. Of course they said they drove in reverse forward made "S" turns and figure eights in reverse and it just wouldnt do what I described. After arguing about it on the phone we came to the agreement that I would go there and drive it with them in the Truck so that I may point out the specific problem. (mind you I had just spent 800 bucks to have my throttle body and gas pedal replaced "drive by wire sucks")

When I arrived the service writer got into the truck at which time I kicked him out and made him stand near the left rear tire. I backed up two feet and he yelled for me to stop. He looked at me and said
"what the hell was that!" I said "your supposed to tell me im not the mechanic." Needless to say it stayed there for "inspection." The mechanic assigned to my truck supposedly has 20 years exp. with a chevy dealership in the bay area. He suggested to the service writer they replace the rearend. The service writer said no.

They called GM's hotline to see what they suggested they do. The answer was to replace all the fluid and flush it out, which would not be covered by the service contract. Oh well I guess so long as it worked right? Wrong! They called me two hours later and said when they pulled the plug to drain the fluid pieces of shims started to come out and were stuck to the magnet. So of course they plugged the hole and took it to a gm dealership because they did not have the knowledge or tools to complete the repair there. If I havent mentioned it, I bought the truck from a VW dealer. (what can I say, they had it used, it was unique and I fell in love) Anyways the GM shop waited two weeks for the approval for the repair from the service contract.

Once they cracked it open they found out I needed new gears cause those were hashed. Ok order the gears you say. Well they did but the "Shim pack" for the pinon gear is "nationaly backordered". What the heck does that mean. So far it means I havent had my truck for just over two months now and they dont have an answer. every time I call they say the part cant be found and they will call me when it comes in.

My baby has been on the service "rack / Lift" for a full month and still no part. I asked if they could replace the 3.73 gears with 4.10's and if so would a shim pack for those gears come with it. According to them if they did that I would still have the same problem.

Im lost, I dont know what other options I have. Can they replace the entire axle? Housing and all or is there some other part that would fix it. I assumed that Chevy is Chevy but they are telling me the shim pack is QS specific. Is that in fact the case. I dont realy think they are trying to rip me off cause for a month now they have been behind because they have one less work station to use. So Im pretty sure they want it out also.

After all my rambling (thanks for "listening") My question is can any of you think of an option or solution to my problem. Maybe one they havent thought of?

Thanks to all who read and reply.

Hi QuadraPaul;

I am sorry to hear that your truck is waiting for parts that long. Mad It is unbelievable that the shim-pack is not available. If I am not mistaken, QS rear differential is Dana 60 limited slip. You may want to check around to see if parts for Dana differentials are available at other sources, even call Dana directly.

I have 2005, 2500 Yukon-XL 6.0L with 4.10 ratio and 9.75” limited slip differential. As per the maintenance manual, limited slip differential overhaul kit is Dana 248. However, you had better check if the same kit fits in your model year too.

You can see the differential component view here: http://quadrasteerclub.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/573102732/m/823100458/p/2

cheers
