Hi,Welome to the club. After driving a Quad Steer, I just can't help myself from wanting to never be without one. I would believe that your mechanic friend is probably right as far as expensive to fix. As far as prone to problems,I have an 05 and haven't had any problems yet.(31,000mi.)I don't know if the earlier models had problems, but I know that there were some soft-ware updates, becase(I think ?) they would kick out of the fourweel steer mode sometimes.Although not really a problem even mine has done this a couple of times.I just stop and turn the key off,and start it again, and it must reset itself. It's only done this twice to me in the very cold weather. Now as far as prone to big problems, I had the same concerns when I was considering buying one too. So I thought that I would ask around. As luck would have it my nieghbor, who works for G.M.,brought one home for while. I asked him all about it and told me that the Quad-Steer was a very reliable unit. Also I Have a friend who was working for Delphi World Headquarters at the time. So I asked him to find out all about it if he could. He got back to me,and told me that everyone there who drove a truck,or suburban would never buy another without Quad-Steer! He also said that they said that the axle and components were very heavy-duty,and made for at least a 300,000 mi.longevity, and went through severe testing, and was a very reliable system. Don't quote me on any of this info,or geek you up to much, because you know how vehicles are,one can have problems and another has none. I really like mine, especially the the way it trailer tows at highway speeds, and turns and parks at slow speeds. I think it's really incredible! I would read through this forum, cause there's alot of info from others, about Quad-Steer. Look through the technical archives. Hope this helps you in your decision.
