I have a 2003 GMC Quadsteer Crew Cab and lately the speedometer has been acting up. It mostly happens on longer trips at interstate speeds. My speedometer will jump to 120+ MPH when I am going 75. As I slow down it is still out of wack. When it is in park it can read anywhere between 30 and 60 MPH. After a couple days of town driving it seems to fix itself until I take it on a trip again. I saw in a different forum that GM charges around $600 to replace the guage cluster. There are also a couple places on Ebay that claim they will fix the problem for around $150, but you have to take the guage cluster out and sent it in to them. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

It's not an uncommon problem on GMT800 platform. There are quite a few people that have had them replaced as 'good will warranty' for free even though they were out of the factor warranty.

I did send my dash gauge cluster in to get fixed. I also got the upgrade to the SS style which has white backing instead of the stock black backing. The gauge was repaired and returned the same day it arrived. So far it looks and works great. I have attached a link to the auction if anyone else is experiencing the same problem. It only takes 5-10 minutes to take the gauge cluster out of the dash.

I am having a similar problem. At first it was the tachometer that was acting up but that seems to be OK now. Instead, the speedometer rarely reads more than about 10mph, no matter what speed I am traveling. I will check out this link also...after I see if my dealer will fix it. Thank for the tip fellas!

It might be to late to ask, any chance to take pics at different stages of the install?

If not, thats alright. Just that it sounds like the install is easier than what is forewarned on the Ebay seller's site.

I know he has to state the warning for legalities, but the stepper motor replacement sure is less expensive than a gauge cluster.

Yes it is a little bit late for this because the cluster is already put back together.

But i'm stil waiting for my bleu glow gauges face plates to arrive with UPS.

Then i can take pictures of the steps...

Sorry, I thought of that after I put it all back together. However, it is really simple. The gauge cluster came out real easy for me. The wire harness plug in the back of the cluster...I used a small slotted screwdriver to lift the locking tab to remove the plug. I had reasonable success with the alignment of the needles. I turned the key off before I unplugged the wiring plug from the harness. This set all needles at "0". So when I put them back on, it was fairly easy to set them in the same position. You will find you can rotate a needle (and thus the stepper motor shaft) clockwise but not counterclockwise. So when you put the needle on, put it on very loosely, then spin the needle one entire revolution counterclockwise, then when the needle is in the correct position, seat it all the way. Hope that helps. Unfortunately, I now have two of the backing lights not working so I may see if I can get replacements for them and redo the whole mess (taking pics at the same time). I seem to recall one of the added services of the eBay guy was to replace lights at the same time so I expect he supplies the lights as well.
