Hello folks,

I'm getting Bridgestone Revo's 285 75 R 16 this weekend.

I have already cranked up the torsion bars in anticipation for the new tires. Do I need to get a 4 wheel alignment done and get the speedonometer (sp) calibrated?

I'm also a little concerned about the clunk that the rear makes when reversing out of a parking spot. I tried a search but no info. Anyone have some input?

Many thanks!
Sean

2003 1500HD Crewcab
HAD a K&N Filter (put the Delco back in)
CURRENTLY has OEM 245's
WANT to have better MPG's (it averages at 13.5)

Heyya, Sean.

Oh yeah....you'll need recalibration !!! I went with 265's and my truck whacked-out HARD !!!! 285's are going to be at least another inch taller, so you'll need to do it. The dealer should be able to do this at minimal charge, however, I have heard of the dealer hassling someone with a Quad about oversize tires and voiding the warranty on the Quad unit. Big time BS... Maybe a smaller shop can do it for you. Or....

A custom tune, of course, will cure that and much, much more thumbs up 2 A tune will also boost your economy- I'm getting about 3mpg better on the highway and well over 1mpg in town. Getting these behemoths going from a stop KILLS our mileage cry

Yes, you'll need an alignment after cranking the bars.

The clunk- does it come from the rear itself or the tranny ?? Could be u-joints, possibly the driveshaft yoke at the trans. How many miles ??

It's at 38K miles. Out of warranty so...

I'll do what you reccomend, recalibrate & realign. When I realign, is it something simple or complex? Any documentation on how a tech should realign that I can take to the guy doing it?

The clunk tend to do it when I was reversing & steering, and sometimes after going forward. Normal driving & turning street corners are absolutely fine. I suppose hard turning at slow speed cause wheel slip on the pavement?

Thanks for answering the questions Mr. Q!

Yeah, our posi units are pretty sweet and tight... and can give the "shuttering" effect. Although my fix for this is a bit more throttle burn out !!!!!

Seriously, tho, check the u-joints and the yoke- I've heard several issues that were resolved with lubing-up the splines on the yoke. Don't over-do-it, but it'll take a bit.

The alignment is not nearly as easy as other vehicles- it requires a Tech2 or similar device to re-center the steering sensors. This is one I'd probably let the bozos at the stealership handle Roll Eyes

Hope that helps thumbs up 2

Thanks Q!

I'll make an appt at the dealer for the alignment.

I WISH I had me one of those Hayes manuals or equivalent for my 03 so I can do some PM's, change my brakes, etc. I did order & receive the Techline CD set but I think I got some worthless stuff because they cover all GM vehicles with TSB's etc. Wonder if I'm looking in the wrong place?

Anyway, I'll be posting pics of my ride with the tires on 'em!

Sean, I don't think the Haynes for our trucks is available yet Mad I'll buy one as soon as it's out !! I must have almost 20 of the Haynes/Clymer books on all my past vehicles, plus quite a few I've bought for different customer's vehicles. Personally, I think Chilton's are good for lining bird cages and not much more.

I bought the techline discs, too, but haven't been able to use them yet. I figured my home pc was too wimpy, but it won't load on my new laptop either... it's not supported by XP home Roll Eyes I have XP Pro, but it won't load cuz my XP home is a newer version and it errors on me.

That should be cured tomorrow- my b-i-l is a guru and is going to redo the laptop for me.

Can't wait !!!!!!

Can't wait to see your new sneakers, either Wink

FYI - Helm publications still sells shop manuals - I just received a set for my 2005 GMC Sierra. Five volume set cost 141.95 with shipping. Check out helminc.com.

When I had my PCM recalibrated for my 285 Revos I noticed that it was off by about 4%. After some careful measuring we settled on a tire height of 31.66" for the calibration. It's right on now.

Hey, Gunny. I used 31.5".

I never did check my speedo calibration, but I think it's okay. I'm taking a trip this weekend, so I figure I'll go ahead and see what the mile-markers say Big Grin

I had a clunking noise as well when I first bought my Suburban 2500 QS, and the dealer fixed it and said there was something wrong with the rear deferriential. I don't know if that helps, I only heard it when i was backing out while turning.

Anyway hope that helps

Hey MobilEVT, are you putting the Revo's on the stock rims? Just curious if they will fit. Some tire dealers around here say they will fit and some say I will need to get bigger rims (16 x 8).
