I also would say, if you and the other guy have had this done a total of 3 times, your going to be in my boat before long and replaceing the carrier and clutch packs because they are fried! eek II Mine were so bad they were not catchin either axle on occassion, letting the driveshaft make a turn or two before engageing either axle to get going! bang head The first Tech said this could not happen. Ive seen the inside and the clutch packs, guess what will probably happen without either side working? puke

Quadrant, I also recommend, getting this covered under warranty. I had all of my fills covered by warranty. They were fixing a noise covered under the bumper to bumper 36,000 or 3 years warranty. If that involved flushing the diff,,,, well that is not your fault. Not to mention that the manual states that this only needs to be done every 50,000 under extreme conditions.

Quadrant, I had to take my truck to a dealer on my first oil change. Service advisor told me that the rear differential fluid has to be changed with the first oil change too. I told him I do not recall seeing such recommendation in the service manual, and asked him to show me at where this is specified. He came back saying “Sorry, it is for standard trucks, not Quadrasteers”. The same might have happened to the previous owner of your truck. However, without the knowledge of this discussion, I would not have questioned the fluid, if I let them to change it. I opposed just not to be ripped of by having an unnecessary fluid change.

Appreciate the advice guys, but vehicle was 12 days out of warranty. In both talking with the service manager at the time of the service and a follow-up call with GM assistance, they had referred to the guidelines of the warranty, if the vehicle had been under coverage, pages 4-7. Go to page 6, starting at "Maintenance".

Personally have issues as to the word-smithing used in the warranty, which causes us all headaches when having to visit the dealership. Just as well I'm out of warranty, prefer to do the work myself anyhow. Thanks again for the support!

Oddball, great of you to keep this chart maintained and published. thumbs up 2
SS Crew, if you are still monitoring this thread, what has been going on with you lately? It seems you are the only one on the chart with an unsolved problem. Can you update us any?

Well the rumbling in my bed noise mysteriously stopped. As for the rear end noise, the $185 rear end service seemed to make that noise go away. But now I'm finding oil spots and anti-freeze spots on my driveway. I just need to make time to get the truck in to the dealer, but it's tough since I'm now using my truck as an office until my job trailer shows up.

My diff just started making noises in turns (49000 miles)and I am going to the dealer to get 3 quarts? of 12378557. My question is can I just suck the old stuff out of the fill hole with my boat oil suction can and refill without pulling the cover?

Thanks,

Dan

Let the dealer do it and have him flush the rear end too to get all the bits and pieces of clutch material from the chattering.

You could...depends on the rear end. Mine has a magnetic drain plug so the job is easy and clean. Otherwise, and if there is more than just minor grit, as there may be with yours, I agree with SS's recommendation. In addition, the spec for filling our diffs is different than non-quadrasteer models. We need to fill within 1/4 of an inch from the bottom of the filler hole. Mine took all 3 litres (Canada eh...that equals 3.17 quarts) and it filled to within 1/16th of an inch of the bottom of the filler hole. 3 quarts should be good but make sure it is real close to the bottom of the filler hole. And if you take it to the dealer, don't be shy about letting them know the same as most of them won't know that.

Oddball...you can add me to the list if you'd like too.

Same deal, wrong fluid. My truck was serviced by the dealership the day I bought it a couple months ago, including the rear diff. Thanks to this forum, I made them fax me the invoice a few days later just incase. Didn't have part numbers, but I knew it was wrong because they only charged 17 bucks a quart instead of the $35ish for Qsteer fluid.

Sure enough a few weeks later...rear diff starts groaning and popping at times in tight turns. Called the shop...they claimed it was the right stuff. Finally convinced them otherwise...mostly 'cause of the obvious price difference. It was Mobil 1 synthetic...good stuff just not the right stuff.

They luckily pitched in the assininely (if that's a word) high priced 3 quarts of Qsteer fluid...I changed out the rear diff fluid, drove in tight circles in all directions. No more abnormal noise...hope it stays that way.

Thanks for all the good info guys. Keep it up

Hello everyone. I finally got around to signing up for this site. I have a lot of stuff to read on here, but all seems to be good info. I have a few questions for some of you. Mainly, I'm directing this to Oddball and SS Crew, seems you two have the most posts directed to this subject, but replies from all are welcome. I have a '04 Denali I bought back in December, and I LOVE IT! In the beginning of June I brought it to the dealer for the 30k mile svc, which I ended up just having them do the intake flush cuz I’m not paying $400 to have them change my fluids and do a tire rotation. Anyways, i had been noticing the groaning noise when turning. I told them of the problem and they said it was normal. Said they were BSing the wrong guy and to find the problem. Took them a couple weeks to find it. Ended up being a broken clip for the clutch packs, and that piece went to town in the rearend and ended up milling the case so now I have a new case and all internals. They didn’t say anything about it, but I told them about the fluid issue and they said they know all about the problems. I’m still going to buy the factory ext warranty out to 100k in case it happens again. Too much expensive stuff on these trucks not to! So Oddball, add me to your list. 30k miles, groaning noises, completed new rearend. Quadrant, even thought this is too late, remember this term, ‘good faith warranty’. Basically it is them covering the parts if your vehicle is just out of warranty. You pay labor and incidentals though. I’ve worked for two polaris shops and I used to get all kinds of stuff covered that way for customers. This is an awesome forum so keep up the good info guys. Take it easy.
