can it be done? I would like to turn my 2001 long bed GMC into a Quadrasteer.

That sounds like a long road to a dead end.

You'll also need:

- Rear Wheel Steering Control Module (may be model year dependent... significant differences in 4WS control logic between pre 2003 and post 2003 models

- Discrete Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal (separate from the VSS used by the PCM)

- Rear Wheel Steering Position Sensor (may or may not be attached to axle for sale)

- Hand Wheel Position Sensor (may or may not be different from the current steering wheel position sensor in your 2001 truck... the one for Quadrasteer must output both digital and analog signals to the RWSCM)

- Combined Yaw Rate Sensor / Lateral Accelerometer Sensor (may or may not be required, depending on whether these inputs are expected by the Rear Wheel Steering Control Module, which would depend on the model year part number of the RWSCM that you obtain)

- A Mode Selector Switch on the Dash

- A new PCM, or a reprogramming of the Powertrain Control Module that can only be supplied by a dealer, who will of course refuse. Class 2 messages from the PCM communitcate with the Rear Wheel Steering Control Module

- A new BCM, or a reprogramming of the Body Control Module that can only be supplied by a dealer, who will of course refuse. Class 2 messages from the BCMto the Rear Wheel Steering

- New programming for the ABS Control Module, for the same reasons as above. VSS information from the PCM and ABS must correlate with the new hard wired VSS that you had to add in order for the RWSCM to validate speed to determine the degree and phase of steering to allow the truck to steer in to keep you on the road and out of the hospital.

- New IPC (intrument panel cluster) module... reprogramming from dealer (who will refuse) or an new module to allow you to be warned of 4WS system faults.

The trouble with obtaining these parts also is complicated by the significant differences in other modules between pre 2003 and post 2003. The DIC is totally different. Communication protocols would need to be verified across all the components that you obtained.

You might consider selling your 2001, and combining that money with the boatloads of money you will spend on modules, harnesses, sensors, brackets... not to mention the money you could have made during all the time lost building your own... and apply all those funds to picking up a nice used ready made Quadrasteer built that way from the factory.
