So, you've swapped your ECM.... AND NOW THE TRUCK WON'T START ?!!!?

Fear not, this simply means the ECM going in hasn't been used with it's new VIN number yet. It's up to you to teach it.


After installing the new ECM, you would have naturally went around and tried to start the vehicle. What happens is it won't start !! You'll try three or four times, it'll catch, sound like it wants to run, run for a half-second... then die.


Leave the key in the ON position. Look at the dash, the PADLOCK indicator should be illuminated. This indicates the vehicle is in security mode.


Wait approximately 10 minutes for the padlock light to go out. You want to be there and paying attention- if you wait too long, you'll have to start over.


When the padlock light goes out, turn the key to the OFF position, then back to the ON position, but do not try to start it again.


The padlock should again be illuminated. Again wait 10 minutes, when it goes out, turn the key to OFF then back to ON without starting.


You will do this a total of three times.


On the fourth turn to OFF, pull the key from the ignition and reinsert it. The vehicle should start right up this time


If it doesn't, you may have done something wrong. ANY mistake at any point will cause the system to start over, so pay attention !!!

NOTE- I have heard of at least three different methods of doing the security trick. I'm not saying the other methods are wrong or don't work, I just know I've personally done it EXACTLY as I described above four different times and it has never failed to work
