I haven't tried this myself, yet, but you know I will Wink It comes from the highest source hail

On our LSx motors, changing the spark plug gap from .065" (factory spec, or is it .060 Confused) to .045" is worth up to 10hp Eeker beats me

In fact, he went on to say that he has never had an engine make more power with a bigger gap- he recommends .040~.045 for ALL engines !!

At first I figured he'd mean crank hp... but he only has a chassis dyno (to my knowledge), so... 10rwhp ??

The source is good... but I'm still skeptical wtf It's certainly worth a few minutes of your time...

I'll report my findings but if anybody else beats me to it, let us know thumbs up 2

Would reducing the gap without changing the ignition module programming cause the spark to jump the gap earlier?

Would this be like advancing the timing?

Would this cause predetonation or spark knock?

Would higher octane fuel be required?

Would emissions systems be thrown off, causing the computer to try and compsenate?

Enquiring minds want to know.

I just changed plugs to a 300,000 mile Honda where the rounded and worn electrode gap was well over .095" (the highest my gap guage could measure). The specification called for .043" I'll now have to ask the regular driver if any significant pickup in power was noticed.

Mr Q, you ever get around to testing this?

Also, Quadrafacts has some great point/questions.

Mr. Q, this sounds like a tuning related question. Can you get Wester's to give an opinion?

I just shot Lyndon an e-mail to get the official word. Will pass it on when I get it.

Here is the e-mail I sent, along with answers from Lyndon.

quote:

Hi Lyndon,

I have your tune and injectors. They're in and running great, - thanks!

A thread came up on the Quadrasteer forum where the following was attributed to you:
"On our LSx motors, changing the spark plug gap from .065" (factory spec, or is it .060) to .045" is worth up to 10hp".
LYNDON: (Sometimes...we've seen 15HP with a tighter gap on the 8.1L)

The following points were brought up by another member:
"Would reducing the gap without changing the ignition module programming cause the spark to jump the gap earlier?
LYNDON: No. A spark event happens in microseconds...a tighter gap will not affect timing...

Would this be like advancing the timing?
LYNDON: No. The computer commands when the coil current is interrupted, a tighter gap will not affect timing--however it definitely makes sure
that a 'spark event' will occur by dropping the "required firing voltage" with a tighter gap. If you run a wider gap, required voltages to make the spark jump the gap are higher.

Would this cause predetonation or spark knock?
LYNDON: NO.

Would higher octane fuel be required?
LYNDON: NO.

Would emissions systems be thrown off, causing the computer to try and compensate?".
LYNDON: CLEANER emissions result if anything !

With your tune in my 2005 GMC Sierra 1500HD with the 6.0L engine, is this officially what you recommend? If so, do you have a brand preference?
LYNDON: My preference is the NGK Irridium and a tighter gap to ensure that the combustion event occurs.

Wow! That was great Oddball.
That's what I like; clean , clear questions and SHORT, CONCISE answers.

Only remaining questions for me, is for you "already tuned" members...would you need to have your custom tune, re-tuned if you tighten your gap?

Well done! thumbs up 2

Thanks. I asked that question too:

quote:
LOL....no retuning necessary. Just swap the plugs, and don't drop any when you're doing the job !

Lyndon

I really want to try this now. But I think it would make the most sense if I found a dyno and did a before and after comparison.

Anybody know of one in the Michigan area?
