I have my NGK Iridium TR55IX spark plugs on order for Monday. The guy at the counter said they're new so they don't stock them yet.

When I get them I want to make sure they are gapped to the .045" that Lyndon from Wester's recommends. I asked the counter guy what they were pre-gapped to. He said his system didn't say, but that NGK recommends not changing the gap they are set to from them.

I'm looking forward to the 10 - 15 more hp that Lyndon claims! Big Grin At $6.99 + tax each that's $59.28 in Michigan. You can pay a lot more for less of an increase in hp. We'll see... anyone have a g-tech I could borrow!?

According to the NGK SparkPlugs website, all of their Iridium plugs have a .060" gap from the factory.

Let us know how it turns out. I have purchased a set of MSD wires and am waiting to do plugs too. I don't have a westertune but I am interested in using the NGK plugs. Thanks.

Got the plugs now, $6.99 each - ouch! cry

They did come with a factory gap of .059 from the factory.

One person told me that the manufacturer of the plugs did not recommend changing the gap. I could not confirm this warning in writing anywhere, so I'm assuming it is a generic CYA type of thing.

I'm going with what the pro, Wester's own Lyndon recommends .045 gap. Regapped while watching the game yesterday. Will install them this week sometime, once I can borrow a heater for the garage. Teens all week here, - brrrr.

CRAP! pissed

I pulled the first plug last night, 5 degrees outside. Boy, that plug looks a lot like the $6.99 each ones I just bought. Weird, that gap looks the same or smaller than the one Lyndon recommended.

Checked the gap, 0.040". Mad

Pulled another plug to be sure, same. Mad Mad

Wrote down the old plug info, ACDelco 12571164 41-985. Looked up in the Owner's Manual to confirm gap, 0.040". Confused

Searched the web this morning for this mystery ACDelco plug to see why it looked so much like my expensive performance and mileage improving NGK TR55IX Iridium Plugs I was so eager to swap them out for.

Found the following link that I've pasted in below: ACDelco Service Bulletin

PARTS INFORMATION:
A new spark plug has been released for use in the above vehicles. The new spark plug has an
Iridium tip instead of the current Platinum tip. Due to the different tip design, the gap of the
spark plug has also changed. The new spark plug, ACDelco Part Number 41-985 (12571164), is
gapped to 1.01mm (0.040 inches) when the spark plug is made. The spark plug gap is set during
manufacturing and should not be changed to the gap required with the Platinum plug, or damage
to the spark plug may result.
ACDelco service bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer." They are written to inform
these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service
of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and
safely.

I already had Iridium tipped plugs gapped to less than what Lyndon of Wester's recommended! cry bang head skull krusher

Now I'm stuck with all these plugs that aren't any better than the ones that were in my truck to begin with.

I'll post what Lyndon has to say....

Don't believe all the hype about increased power. All the tests I have ever read in racing and boating magazines never showed any gain over a new set of stock plugs. If there was an easy way to get more mileage and power Gm would do it.

Exchange with Lyndon:
popcorn

quote:

Oddball:
I got the NGK Iridium plugs you recommended, and then regapped them to the 0.045" that you recommended. I pulled the first couple plugs in my truck and found that they are ACDelco 12571164 41-985 gapped to 0.040". They looked an awful lot like NGKs.

Per the following, the plugs that are in my truck already are Iridium tipped and gapped to 0.040". It is the V-6 & V-8 8.1L trucks that are gapped to 0.060".

Do you think there is any benefit to swapping them out now? If so, what should they be gapped to? (The plugs looked good, except for a pink coloring on part of the insulator.)

Lyndon:
All spark plug 'guides' recommend .060" , so I'm not sure where you got your V6-8.1L information from--possibly a forum ? Someone has already installed a tighter gap in your truck... We recommend a tighter gap to reduce missfire--and also saw 10-15HP on the dyno when doing this in the 8.1L (reducing gap alone), so this told us that the existing electrical system and design wasn't adequate. A missfire will also be interpreted as a lean pulse, O2 sensors see this as 'lean' and also richen the mixture.

If plugs 'look good' -- how else do you test them ?
By looking at the secondary required voltage, amperage drawn at the coil at firing time, and looking at the length of time that the plug fires--along with the pattern produced on a labscope.

Latest recommendations from NGK

SPARK PLUGS
Spark Plug Part No. Stock No. Plug Gap Note
G-Power Platinum TR55GP 3403 0.060
Laser PZTR5A-15 7862 0.060
Iridium IX TR55IX 7164 0.060

WIRE SETS
Note Part No. Stock No.
RC-GMX091 51033

Oddball:
The guide I quoted was the Owners Manual that came with the truck; - see the attached file that shows the factory spark plug gaps for all engines available for my year, 2005.

I understand smaller gaps to gain more power, as you did with the 8.1L going from 0.060 to 0.045.

So what I'm trying to understand is whether I should take the factory ACDelco Iridium tipped plugs that were factory gapped to 0.040 out of the truck, and replace them with the larger gapped (you originally recommended 0.045 to me) NGK Iridium plugs.

Lyndon:
Aha ! GM's finally catching on....
If the reach is different on the plugs...use the longer reach. Otherwise you're already at the right gap. The 'guide' I sent you was 2004...they have no info for 2005 !

Oddball:
I figured it was something like that; - GM catching up with what the tuners have already been saying. You do some of their best engineering!

BTW, both plugs have the same reach according to the calipers.

So, do you know anyone who wants these NGK plugs? I don't think the auto parts store will take them back now that I've regapped them...crap!

So, the moral of the story is, see what you've got in your truck before you go buying replacements. blush
If you've got an older truck you can likely benefit from changing them out since GM saw the benefit of going with Iridium plugs and a smaller gap on the newer models.

I live, you learn! buds
