I was thinking of supercharging and or long tubes right away. Any one seen better improvements with one or the other? I know cost is on the other end of the spectrum with this question but I am throwing it out there.

IMHO, I'd do the long tubes. You'll gain apprx. 20-25hp. Yes you'll gain more with the SC, but I'm from the school where I prefer to build up the drivetrain/braking towards that eventual SC and help compensate for the weight of our trucks.

Yes, I have used the Edelbrock shorty headers and was impressed. The LT's (long tubes) seem to give more power and have become very popular.
